Most of us know that we should be backing up our files. If you've never experienced a hard drive failure or complete PC crash then consider yourself lucky, and recognize that there's never been a better moment then this one right here to get started backing up your important files, folders and multimedia data.
There's a few tips and items you should familiarize yourself with before you select a backup method to use.Ensuring you keep the process simple and having an idea of how much data you want backed up are just a couple of the things you need to remember when selecting your backup software or service.
Know what Files and Data to Backup
OK, so first things first don't go out and just buy the first backup program you see. Before you do that you should determine how many files, what folders and data it is you want to backup. Some software is developed specifically to create a complete system backup, but this might be more then you need.
Most of us that are just average home computer users should backup our videos, photos, and personal documents but shouldn't worry to much about the rest. This can make things a little to high tech for someone who's just an average joe or jane PC user.
Keep it simple to be consistent
Just because a backup service or program offers more features then another doesn't make it better.Trust me when I tell you to avoid buying a service or program that is very feature rich. Get the features you need but to many features slows down the backup process, this will in turn make it difficult for you to stick to a regular backup routine.
Instead opt for a simple program, more specifically one that backups up your files all on it's own and only requires a one time setup. A couple of good programs to consider are Carbonite or Mozy online backup.
Review and Research your Options
Don't just rush off to buy into any old service, take some time to read online backup reviews to ensure you're getting a quality product and service that will serve it's purpose. This just confirms that the software or service you've chosen is every bit as good as it claims to be.
Spending just a few minutes before you buy a program or service will ensure that you will easily be able to restore files and also that files are backed up properly.
